The Worm Inn®
What is the Worm Inn® and how does it work?
The Worm Inn® is a worm composter that helps manage the composting process.
The Worm Inn® allows you to place worms, bedding, and scraps in the top of the composter. When castings area ready to harvest, you simply relase the toggles at the bottom of the composter collect the worm castings.
The Worm Inn® is made out of breathable, yet extraordinarily durable material. The same materials used in high-end backpacks. Air flow is a key component for healthy worms. The Worm Inn® provides continuous flow throughout the composting process.
The Worm Inn® can fit almost anywhere with a footprint of 18" x 18". It can fit on a laundry hamper stand, or on back of a door.
You can also build a 5-minute custom, no bend stand. The stand kit includes instructions and 8 custom corner pieces, along with 4 zip ties to build this heavy duty stand. NOTE: The kit does NOT include PVC pipe, which will need to be purchased separately (three 10 feet PVC pipe cost about $1.45 each). Assembly will be required. See picture of stand in lower right hand corner of this page.
Set-up Instructions
The only things you need are as follows
Worm Inn
Bedding: can include cardboard strips, egg carton containers, paper towels, and black and white newspaper strips (avoid glossy inserts)
Food/garden scraps: click here to see Worm Care Instruction section
Worms
Follow these instructions
If you are going to keep the Worm Inn® outside, choose a shady location and avoid direct sunlight.
If you are going to keep the Inn in the house, you can hang it on a laundry stand, a TV stand, on a shelf (see picture above), or purchase the Inn with the stand kit option.
Zip ties are included with the kit and work very well for hanging the Inn
Pull the ropes on the bottom of the Worm Inn® and lock the toggles to close.
Place a bucket or bowl underneath the Inn to catch any moisture drops
Fill the Inn half full with damp fluffed bedding (if you are using Nightcrawlers, then dirt needs to be added).
Add worms (recommend 1-3 pounds of worms)
Add food/garden scraps and bury them in bedding: click here to see Worm Care Instruction section
Water your Inn when it needs water, keeping bedding damp
When the worms have processed the scraps and the bedding, simply open the toggles on the bottom and control the output of the castings (think of milking a cow) into a bowl or a bucket. When you see unfinished materials, simply pull the toggles shut and put the unfinished scraps back into the Inn for more processing.
As the system settles, the worms move upwards, digesting the microbial waste of the food, which result in worm castings.
